The Called to Witness program gives adults serving in Catholic youth ministry a firsthand experience of the developing world. Sponsored by Catholic Relief Services (CRS) and NFCYM, it strengthens the ability of youth leaders to promote global justice. Participants visit CRS project sites and build solidarity with brothers and sisters overseas. Past trips have gone to El Salvador, Haiti and Rwanda.
Called to Witness took a two-year hiatus while CRS and NFCYM evaluated and redesigned it. Plans are under way for a trip to Ecuador in March 2007. This experience will focus largely on immigration and child labor, issues at the forefront of CRS initiatives in Ecuador and of great concern to American youth.
Called to Witness 2007 participants include:
- Joyce Francois, archdiocesan director of youth ministry, Detroit, Michigan
- Christina Lujan, youth ministry coordinator, St. Louis of France, La Puente, California
- Elaine Menardi, diocesan director of youth ministry, Cheyenne, Wyoming
- Sandra Pinkerton, faith formation volunteer, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, Plano, Texas
- Caroline Rau, coordinator of youth ministries, St. Athanasius, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
- John Rinaldo, archdiocesan consultant for youth ministry and Confirmation, Los Angeles, California
- Emily Szemprech, director of youth ministry, St. Joseph, Richardson, Texas
